If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Overview

Travel and tourism are worldwide industries that continue to play an important part in both wealthy nations and developing economies. In many ways, they are businesses of adventure, but are also building global communities and creating wealth at every level. The industries also support many innovative specialist fields including eco-tourism and global volunteering.

This major provides training for people who want to operate at a senior travel and tourism industry level using substantial depth of knowledge of the industry and its managerial techniques. You will develop specialised skills and learn how to operate independently with responsibility for making strategic business decisions. Careers include tourism officer, travel consultant, destination coordinator and adventure tour operator.

Topics of study include tourism marketing, consumer behaviour, services marketing, communications and developing tourism products. The degree offers practical, vocational workplace skills and knowledge of the tourism industry together with a broader conceptual base that covers the principal areas of business necessary for senior level management.

The first year and a half of the degree is a combination of TAFE and University study while the last half of the degree is University only. Within the Bachelor of Business component of the degree, you can major in human resource management, management, marketing or public relations to complement your TAFE Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management.

You will also undertake a final-year capstone subject that lets you apply everything you have learned in collaboration with students from other disciplines. Plus, you have the option of applying for an internship to gain valuable work experience whilst receiving credit towards your degree.

Human Resource Management (major)

Human resource management (HRM) is a critical component of business, recognising people as an organisation's most valuable resource. This program goes beyond the traditional approach of finding and employing staff, extending into the realm of nurturing, and retaining talent to optimise performance. Specific focus is placed on the acquisition and development of employees, positively influencing their employment performance, and monitoring and managing the processes of staff selection, retention and turnover. HRM examines specific people management practices such as recruitment and selection, remuneration and performance management, employee relations, management of change, learning and development and workplace health and safety management.

The final-year capstone subject allows you to apply everything you have learned in collaboration with students from other disciplines.

  • Higher Education Study

    For your application to be assessed on your university results you need to have completed at least half a year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at a Bachelor's degree level or higher. Your grades will be converted to a selection rank to be used for admission purposes. Students may also be eligible for credit for prior learning.

  • Work and life experience

    Admission to UOW is primarily based on your academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered. If you do not meet the academic requirements for this course, we recommend exploring recognized pathway programs, such as those offered by or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

    UOW's Woolyungah Indigenous Centre's Indigenous Admissions Program (IAP) offers an alternative pathway for Indigenous Australians aged 17 and over who are seeking entry into an undergraduate course at UOW. Upon completing the IAP, applicants will be considered for admission based on an interview and assessment of both academic and non-academic qualities.   • Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

    If you have completed or partially completed studies at an approved university or tertiary institution, you may be eligible for entry to UOW. You'll need to provide academic records, and your course must be at least one-sixth complete. Non-English documents must include an official English translation.   • English language proficiency

    All UOW courses are taught in English and require varying levels of proficiency. If English is not your first language, you must meet the University’s English Language Requirements, which differ by course.

    Accepted international test results include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET for specific health-related courses.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    Part-Time Study Load

    For part-time students, study hours will vary based on the number of units taken, with similar expectations for class and independent study.
